Underground Gardens in Fresno
May 10-13, 2021
Fresno, California.
Left the East Bay and headed down to Fresno. We hit the road in our respective rigs and headed south and east. The day had a few frustrations, water pump in the rig did not want to work, the hitch that connects the towed truck to the rig had a problem, and when we did get to camp our truck’s starter battery was DEAD! Fortunately all of the problems seem to sort themselves out. We stayed at the Elks in Fresno, small little camp sight, but rigs are mostly under the shade of some big trees, so relatively comfortable. It was very hot when we got to Fresno, and got hotter as the afternoon progressed. Took it easy and had dinner out and then came back to camp and “VEGGED”!
Tuesday morning we went to The Forestiere Underground Gardens, in Fresno. Interesting place,1906 Baldassare Forestiere started creating and building his unique and unusual dwelling as well as planting many citrus trees in the grottos he dug to deal with Fresno’s HEAT. He bought 80 acres for $80. Working for over 40 years he made this interesting oasis in the desert. Using only hand tools and his own labor.
Lunch was another entry into our Brew Pub Challenge. We ate at Mad Duck Craft Brewing. Beers sold there are made there. More pubs to come!!
Wednesday morning we headed about 70 miles east to Sequoia/Kings Canyon National Parks. Eric had been there but neither Mike or Karen had. Simply SPECTACULAR! Took about a 1 mile walking trail into the forest where we saw the General Grant’s Sequoia Grove. Unbelievable trees –General Grant is the second largest tree in the world. It is estimated to be 1,650 + years old. The dimensions are an amazing 107.6 feet around, 267 feet tall and still growing. We then took a drive through part of park and admired the canyon and Sierra Nevada Mountain Range. Great day added new National Parks to our list and had a chance to enjoy cooler temperatures in the mountains.
Thursday was a low-key day, ran some errands, caught up on a few projects, rested, and tried to stay out of the heat. We ended our day in a cool Brew Pub. Pub # 5 of our challenge, Goldstein’s Mortuary and Deli.
